COVINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team dropped their series opener against Frostburg State Tuesday night falling 11-8.
The Bobcats (12-19, 2-16-1) tied the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Ryan Roell and followed up the next inning with another run to take their first lead of the game up 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Critchfield and Bridger Taylor put the Knights back on top 3-2 after each recorded an RBI.
The Bobcats offense started to warm up in the top of the seventh when they scored three runs on four hits taking back the lead 5-3.
After three more runs by the Bobcats, the Knights trailed 8-3 when Critchfield and Taylor continued their strong day at the plate smacking back-to-back solo homers pulling the Knights to within three 8-5.
The Bobcats built on their lead in the top of the ninth inning with their third consecutive three-run inning up now 11-5.
In their final opportunity at the plate, the Knights rallied producing the most runs in an inning on the day with three but the Bobcats lead was too much for the Knights falling 11-8.
Critchfield finished a single shy of the cycle going 3 for 5 at the plate with a double, triple and a home run for a total of three RBIs. Taylor tied with a team-high three RBIs, he recorded his eighth home run of the season tying the single-season record in the school's Division III era.
Jonny Soto took the mound for the Knights tossing seven innings allowing five runs and picking up a pair of strikeouts in the loss.
The Knights return tomorrow finishing the series with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
