BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia baseball team took a ninth place finish in the Capital Athletic Conference tying St. Mary's College of Maryland with a 5-13 league record. The Knights completed their 2016 season going 9-23 overall.
Southern Virginia recorded conference wins this year against the University of Mary Washington, Penn State Harrisburg, York College, No. 14 Christopher Newport University, and St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Knights also earned non-conference victories against William Peace, Southern Vermont, and Greensboro colleges.
Freshman Marcus Begg led the team with a .403 batting average, 33 RBIs, and 23 runs including 6 homeruns. Begg also earned nine doubles and three triples. He was named CAC Rookie of the Year. Sophomore Ryan Saunders ranked second on the team with a .328 batting average and 17 RBIs as well as placed third with 6 stolen bases. He also tallied 38 hits including nine doubles and three triples.
Freshman Jordan Nase finished third on the team with a .315 batting average and 16 RBIs along with 12 stolen bases. He led the team with 24 runs and tallied 40 hits with four doubles. Freshman Craig Reeves recorded two homeruns and three doubles this year.
Junior Colin Bigelow contributed to the Knights success this season on the mound leading the team with a 3.81 ERA and recording 45 strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Jonathan Hodges finished second on the team with an ERAof 5.61 and one save. Sophomore Seth Burris led the team with four wins this season.
