By Daniel Whitehead

SALEM, Va.—Making up for a previously postponed matchup with Roanoke College, the Southern Virginia University baseball team fell on the road to the Maroons by an 8-2 score Thursday night at Kiwanis Park in Salem, Va.

In 41 at-bats, Roanoke (10-11) earned the eight runs by way of 14 hits and eight RBI in addition to three walks and six strikeouts while leaving 13 on base at the end of each inning. The Knights (5-15) had 32 at-bats but struggled from the plate, registering just six hits, two walks and suffering 10 strikeouts. Six runners were left stranded throughout the game to contribute to the loss.

The Maroons jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning before increasing the lead to 5-0 after three and 6-0 after four. Southern Virginia showed some life in the fifth inning as the Knights' Andrew Price reached on an error before advancing to second on a 5-3 ground out from Mitch Mantle. CJ Andrus then singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder, scoring Price from second to cut the lead to 6-1. Andrus was left on base after a Hunter Allen strikeout and Jordan Keefer grounding out to third.

Roanoke would score two more runs in consecutive innings before the Knights struck another run in the top of the eighth. Allen singled to right field before advancing to second on a Keefer ground out. Ryan Gabriel then doubled down the right field line to score Allen for the Knights' final run of the night. Gabriel was left stranded when Keenan Johnson flied out to center field facing two outs.

Southern Virginia resumes conference play Saturday afternoon with a twinbill at first-year baseball program Marymount University. The first toss is slated for a noon start in Arlington, Va.
