BUENA VISTA, Va. - Behind 22-runs, and a Mitch Mantle no-hitter, the Southern Virginia University baseball team swept past University of Maine- Presque Isle, 5-1 & 17-0. The hot hitting for the Knights continued, as the 22-runs combined with 30-runs in the previous two games, and has the Knights averaging 13-runs per game in the past four.
The first game for SVU was tighter than expected, as the hosts led 2-0 in the third before UMPI scored a run to get as close as they could all afternoon. Barrett Price and Mitch Stevenson were scored from a Tyler Cox single. The two runs ensured the win for the Knights, as they would add another run in the sixth for the final margin of victory.
Josh Linn continued his hot hitting, as he went 3-for-3 in the first game with an RBI. He would add another hit and RBI in the second game to finish 4-for-7 on the afternoon. Cox's 2-for-3 game would also help in the first victory. Jake Messerly recorded the win, as he gave up 4-hits and struck out five batter sin six innings of work.
The close call was soon forgotten, as the bats came alive in the first inning for the Knights. The entire lineup came to bat in the first inning, as Southern Virginia scored 9-runs to effectively end the game. Almost all of the runners scored, as The Knights recorded a third 17-run game in the past four games.
Mantle was meanwhile working on a gem, as he went the distance, and prevented any UMPI batters from recording a hit. Mantle was proving effective in getting the visitors to ground out, and recorded 5-strikeouts on the afternoon. Dale Brown had a strong second game, as he went 3-for-3, and added 2-RBI's with two runs scored. The Knights finished their scoring in the second inning, as they added another eight runs, and finished off a game that gives them one of the best starts in program history.
The Knights now have a 7-1 record, and will return to the diamond Feb. 22 when they host UVA-Wise in a double-header. First pitch for the first game is set at 12:00 pm at Parry McCluer High School.
