DANVILLE, Va. - Behind stellar pitching from Darrel Brown, the Southern Virginia University baseball team was able to mount a comeback to overcome 3-run deficit, and record the first win of the season, 5-4, over hosts Averett. Brown pitched a complete game, and struck out five batters on the way to the victory. The senior pitcher only allowed 2-earned runs, as the Knights opened with on the road against the Cougars.
A win was looking unlikely for the visitors, as Averett jumped to a 3-0 lead after 3-innings. Josh Linn had come the closest for the Knights in the innings leading up to their first runs, as he made it to third after a walk in the fourth inning. A double play ended the rally, and the Knights would need to wait until the sixth inning, when they would tie up the game at 3-3.
Andrew Snider, Dale Brown and Trager Hintze all scored to get the Knights even. Mitch Stevenson hit in the first of his two RBI's in the sixth. Averett would take the lead again in the bottom of the sixth before Linn drove in Jake Johnson for the tying score.
Brown was shutting down the Averett hitters after the early runs, and he got the run support he needed in the eighth inning as Stevenson's sacrifice fly allowed Dale Brown to score the wining run. From their SVU's defense did not allow a run as he hosts got no closer than second base.
The Knight's leading hiter was Dale Brown who went 3-for-4 with two runs scores, and Hintze who batted .500 on 2-for-4 hitting.
SVU will stay on the road for their next competition as the Knights will face Guilford in Greensboro, N.C. on Feb 12. The doubleheader has the first ame starting at 12:00 pm.
