LEXINGTON, Va. Washington & Lee University scored six runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, and overwhelmed the Southern Virginia Baseball team on its way to 12-3 win. SVU had used the top of the 3rd inning to take a 3-1 lead as Jake Johnson, C.J. Andrus and Tyler Cox scored to swing the momentum in the way of the visitors. All three runners had got on base with singles as the Knights looked to get an elusive win against the cross town foes.
The game had started rough for the Knights, as they were able to get runners into scoring position, only for a costly double-play to snuff out the scoring opportunities. W&L was able to get on the board first, after a run was batted in, in the bottom of the first.
The Knights were left to rue chances in the third, as they had more runners in scoring position to take advantage of the Generals, but the bats went cold for the visitors, and W&L went on to the big 3rd inning, followed by a strong fourth which put the game out of reach for the Knights.
Nick Denny took the loss, as he was only able to last three and a third innings, giving up 6-earned runs on 7-hits with no strikeouts. The Knights were able to stay close to the Generals in hits, as they registered 9 to W&L's 14, but the Knights could not translate the hits into runs. Johnson, Andrus and Cox were able to go 2-for-4, 2-for-5 and 3-for-5 respectively to give the Knights the bulk of their offensive punch.
SVU will look to rebound from the loss as they host a four-game home stretch against Hiwassee College. The first double header is scheduled for March 5, with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm. The Knights will return the next day for another double-header against Hiwassee. These games will represent the first true home games of the season, as Parry McLuer's field is ready for play. After the W&L loss the Knights fall to 4-5 on the season.
