ETTRICK, Va. After a losing streak that dropped The Southern Virginia Baseball team to .500, the team got a double-header win over Virginia State, 7-1 and 8-4. Skyler Shope batted 3-for-6 in the two games and batted in a run and scored two more as the Knights were able to rebound from two close losses against UVA- Wise during the week.
SVU went down early to VSU, as the hosts took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The lead held firm until the Shope led off with a single in the first, followed by hits from Trager Hintze, Ed Greenhalgh, Ryan Carpenter, and a double from Jake Johnson. All five batters scored the runs the Knights would need to get the win.
Southern Virginia tacked on two ore runs in the top of the seventh for the final 6-run cushion. Derek Snider recorded the win for the Knights as he went seven innings, and gave up only five hits while striking out three batters.
The Knights were able to get on the board first in the second game as three runs came across home plate to give the visitors the early lead. Johnson had scored a run in the third, and scored again in the fifth as the Knights tacked on three more runs to extend the lead to 6-1, after a VSU run in the fourth. Andrew Snider scored and drove in a run after a triple in the fifth.
The top of the seventh saw the Knights put up two more runs. The runs were a cushion the visitors needed, as VSU added three more runs to get within four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Darrell Brown pitched for the win, as he went the full seven innings, giving up 13-hits, and striking out one batter. The wins propelled the Knights to a 16-14 record. SVU will be back in action April 13 when they look for payback against UVA- Wise. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
