Knights Stumble Back To .500 With Losses To UVA-Wise

WISE, Va. The Southern Virginia Baseball team could not find the winning formula against UVA-Wise, as they fell 5-15 and 3-4 in a double-header. The Knights were stung early in the game as UVA-Wise added two runs in the bottom of the second, and then blitzed the Knights with 8- runs in the third to end the game as a contest.

Jake Johnson had a strong outing despite the loss, as he went 3-for-4 with 3-RBI, which included a 2-run homerun and a double. The Knights got their first runs of the game in the top of the fourth, as they sent three runners home, and closed the gap on the hosts at 10-3.

In the first meeting between the two teams, SVU had been able to rebound from a 6-run deficit to get to within one before eventually falling to the Mountain Cavaliers. The same script would not occur in this game after UVA-Wise tacked on two more runs in the fifth, and then added another three in the bottom of the sixth.

The Knights were able to get 10-hits in the game, three less than the hosts, but the visitors could not bring the runners home to make a game of the contest.

SVU looked to jump on the hosts early in the second game to get a split of the double-header. Johnson hit another double, and was brought home later in the inning to put the Knights up 1-0. Skyler Shope scored in the second to give the Knight a two run advantage. One more run in the fourth pushed the Knights to a 3-run lead. Derek Snider was pitching a strong game and keeping the hosts' bats in check.

UVA-Wise got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, and it was the beginning of a rally, that eventually led them to victory over the Knights. Two more runs scored in the bottom of the sixth for the hosts to tie the game, and then the bottom of the seventh saw the Knights unable to keep UVA-Wise from scoring the winning run after a triple sent a man on base home.

The losses drop the Knights to 16-16 on the season. They will look to rebound April 15, when they travel to play at Hampden-Sydney. The single game is scheduled for 9-innings and will start at 3:30 pm
