OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Me. The Southern Virginia Baseball team's return trip to the USCAA National Tournament for the first time since 2005, did not go as planned, as they dropped the opening game to University of Cincinnati-Clermont 3-1. The Knights came in to the game as the #3 seed, and were shocked early on against the Cougars, as UCC was able to get the first runs of the game.
UCC scored two runs in the top of the third to get an advantage that proved too much for the Knights to overcome. Darrell Brown had been pitching well until giving up the two runs, he went the rest of the game, and only surrendered six hits, but the two runes in the third proved costly. The two-out rally for the Cougars gave them a two-run lead until the bottom of the sixth inning.
SVU was able to get runners on in the sixth, and C.J. Andrus scored to cut the Cougars' lead to one. Andrew Snider hit a single up the middle to send Andrus home, and the Knights had hope to get back to even.
UCC had other plans, as they tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh to put the knights in a hole they could not climb out of. Snider had a solid performance despite the loss, as he went 3-for-3, and had the lone RBI for the Knights.
The loss dents the title hopes for SVU, but the tournamnt is not over. SVU will face off against the loser of game #4 at the tournament. SVU would face either PSU-Greater Allegheny, or Southern Maine.
