COVINGTON, Va. The Southern Virginia Baseball team welcomed Penn State- Greater Allegheny, and was able to come out on top, 9-1 & 7-3, in the first two games of a four-game series.
SVU trailed early to the visitors in the first game, as PSGA took a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning. The Knights' bats came alive, and homeruns from C.J. Andrus and Derek Snider pushed the hosts to a 3-1 lead. The Knights would not trail again in the game, and added runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to get the 8-run lead and the win.
SVU totaled 9-hits with three of those being homeruns. The early runs were all that Snider would need on the mound, as he went all seven innings and went to 5-1 on the season. Snider gave up three hits and one earned run, while striking out two batters.
The second game was closer as PSGA looked for a comeback, and a split of the first day's games. Again, the visitors took a one run lead in the first inning, but SVU, again, answered in the bottom of the first with Jake Johnson coming home off an Andrew Snider double.
Both teams put up a single run in the second inning, and were quiet for the next two innings. Darrell Brown worked to full seven innings for the Knights, and looked to keep the visitors' bats quite. Brown surrendered only one more run in the fifth inning before the SVU offense took over to give him the win.
Back-to-back triples from Tyler Cox and Andrew Snider helped bring in three runs for SVU, as they took a lead they would no give back. The hosts tacked on two more runs in the sixth to give Brown all the cushion he needed, as he shut down PSGA in the seventh giving up only a single, to end the game 7-3 in favor of the Knights.
With the wins, SVU moves to 12-6 on the season. The Knights return to action March 20, for the concluding two games of the four-game series with PSGA. The first game is scheduled for 12:00 pm, at Parry McCluer High School.
