BUENA VISTA, Va. With a 7-2 loss and then a 11-1 win, the Southern Virginia Baseball team earned a series win over Penn State- Greater Allegheny. The Knights came in to the double header looking for a four game sweep of the visitors after they won the previous days' games, but PSGA jumped to an early lead in the first game to put pressure on the hosts.
A 1-0 lead for PSGA went to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning before Skyler Shope doubled and scored off of an Ed Greenhalgh single. PSGA put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth as they put three more runs up on the board. SVU could only respond with one more run in the bottom of the sixth, and could not get closer.
Nick Denny took the loss as he went the full seven innings, giving up 10-hits and 7-earned runs. Ryan Carpenter batted well for the Knights going 2-for-3 in the loss.
SVU made amends quickly for the loss as they jumped to a quick 3-1 lead after the first inning. Three straight walks from the PSGA pitcher helped bring home Jake Johnson, C.J. Andrus and Jordan Williams for the early advantage.
The early lead would be all that Johnson would need, as he pitched the second game and shut PSGA out for the rest of the afternoon. SVU went in to the sixth inning leading 4-1, and then exploded for seven runs to finish off the game.
Johnson went six innings and struck out four batters while giving up only 6-hits and one earned run.
SVU now moves to 13-7 for the season. The series win is the third for the Knights as they swept four games from Hiwassee, and three from Main- Presque Isle earlier in the season. The Knights return to action March 23, when they travel to play at Ferrum College. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
