Baseball Has Big Day in Pennsylvania

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team rolled in a double-header against the Lancaster Bible Chargers. The Knights won both games scoring a combined 31 runs as pitching and team defense held the Chargers to only one run on the day.
In game one, the Knights started by scoring one run in the first inning. They added two more runs in the second inning off a single from Jake Johnson, and then three additional runs in the third inning off an error from Lancaster Bible.
Going into the seventh inning, the score was 9-1 in favor of Southern Virginia, but the Knights still had plenty of power in their bats. They scored six runs while scattering five hits. Jeremy Hall led off the inning with a walk, Jake Johnson singled to center bringing up Seth French who grounded out on a fielder's choice while advancing runners to second and third. Corbin Brown then dug in at the plate and hit a line drive single to left field bringing in Hall and Johnson. The Knights kept things going as Drew Ludwig doubled to left-center bringing in Brown. Tristin French continued the onslaught by getting a single to bring in Ludwig, Justin Eggers followed by homering to left field to give the Knights a commanding 15-1 lead. Jake Johnson went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, four RBI's, and a stolen base. Justin Eggers went 3-for-4 with a homer, three runs scored, and three RBI's.
Mike Edstrom got the win for Southern Virginia, having given up only one hit while striking out five. Edstrom improved to a season leading 6-0 personal record while on the mound for the Knights.
Southern Virginia didn't slow down the bats in game two as the they quickly pulled ahead scoring four runs in the first and then five runs in the second inning. The Knights added more to their offensive output as Drew Ludwig, Andy Lewis, and Nick Giles each singled to load the bases for Jake Johnson. Johnson ripped a fastball over the right center field fence for his first grand slam of the year. The Chargers couldn't respond to the offensive showcase as the Knights prevailed 16-0. Johnson again led the way going 3-for-3 with a grand slam homerun and five RBI's. Seth French went 4-for-6 with a run scored. Drew Ludwig went 3-for-5 with a two RBI's, and Andy Lewis and Nick Giles added two hits each.
TJ Whiting started on the mound for the Knights. He pitched four innings and gave up only one hit while striking out four Chargers. Darrell Brown came in to close out the game, pitching three innings, striking out five, and allowing just one hit.
The Knights improved to 15-10 going into the last week of March. They will host the Rams of Bluefield College in a double-header this coming Tuesday with a scheduled noon first pitch at Perry McCluer High School.
