The Mission of Southern Virginia University
ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT BELIEFS
We believe in providing professionally accomplished, spiritually rooted, service oriented, and self-reliant staff and coaches who are committed to recruiting and retaining scholar-athletes and to developing a representative athletic program, designed for the physical and moral enhancement of participants. We will provide opportunities for them to mature in scholarship and discipleship, learn personal and team accountability, and grow in enthusiasm and refinement.
We believe that a successful intercollegiate athletic department can provide positive and widespread recognition for the University, and that the common experience provided by intercollegiate athletics and shared by faculty, staff, alumni, friends of the University, and the community, can aid in the overall development of institutional loyalty and unity.
We believe that intercollegiate athletics provide valuable experiences that complement other segments of the educational program and are a vital part of education as it contributes to building leader-servants. Participation in intercollegiate athletics promotes the development and maintenance of sound physical and mental health, desirable social and recreational competencies, lasting personal relationships, and a positive self-image.
We believe that through strict observance of the university's honor code, including dress and grooming standards, by our coaches, staff, and scholar-athletes, we can be a model and an example as we follow the illuminated pathway of learning, uniting the university community and sustaining its integrity and purpose.
