FREDERICKSBURG, Va.— The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team dropped a tight 5-4 match at the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Knights fall to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
In doubles, the Knights jumped out to a 2-1 lead as Marcos Dias and Daniel Blonquist overcame a match point to take down their opponents, 8-7(4). The other doubles point for Southern Virginia came at the No. 3 spot as Paul Monson and Benton Drake teamed up to take an 8-5 victory.
In singles, the Knights lost the first three matches off the court at No.'s 3, 5, and 6. Now down 4-2, Kukutla Motlojoa came up with a 6-1, 6-3 victory to bring the Knights within one point. At that point, Marcos Dias saved three set-points in the second set tiebreaker to eke out a 6-4, 7-6(7) win over the No. 22 player in the country, Moses Hutchinson.
Unfortunately for the Knights, Daniel Blonquist began cramping in his match with a comfortable 6-2, 2-0 lead. Blonquist tried to play through but wasn't able to overcome them, falling 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Knights will look to bounce back as they travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland for another conference matchup on the 9th of April with match time scheduled for 4 p.m.
