BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team fell in their season opener to Hampden Sydney College (1-0) 21-16.
Tennison Schmidt and Chandler Wescott led the Knights (0-1) with seven points each, with Schmidt scoring six goals and one assist and Wescot scoring four goals and three assists. Zach Danneman followed closely with six points scoring three goals and three assists.
Defensively, Seth Millington and Shawn Lamb caused three turnovers each. Jaydon Arnold brought in a team-high ten ground balls off face-offs while Nick Bair recorded seven. Dalon Hampshire faced 39 shots in between the pipes and recorded 18 saves.
The Tigers wasted no time scoring four goals within the first three minutes of the game. The Knights closed out the quarter on a positive note outscoring Hampden Sydney 3-2 to cut into their deficit 6-3.
The second quarter saw both teams mirroring each other with exchanged goals. Southern Virginia headed into halftime down three goals 10-7. Schmidt led all players with three goals.
The Knights came out of the break using a 3-0 run led by two Danneman goals to tie the game at 10. The Tigers responded confidently with a 3-0 run of their own to bring the score to 13-10 with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Wescott and Schmidt added a goal each at the end of the quarter to head into the fourth down two points 14-12.
After an early 3-0 run by Hampden Sydney, the Tigers held their largest lead 17-12. Following an exchange of goals, the Knights used a 3-1 run led by two Schmidt goals to come within three goals 19-16.
Hampden Sydney took advantage of the open net after the Knights attempted to lock all players off and scored two final goals to secure the 21-16 victory.
Southern Virginia takes on Pfeiffer Wednesday, February 24 at Knight Stadium. Game time is set for 4 PM.
