BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team opened their season Saturday afternoon, hosting Centre College (0-1), with the Knights taking the victory 14-13.
Offensively, Alissa Johnson led all players with seven points in the form of six goals and one assist, while freshman Paige Sieverts impressed in her collegiate debut scoring four points with three goals and one assist. Senior Lauren Thatcher dished out a game-high four assists while also scoring one goal.
Holly Cunha dominated in between the pipes recording 16 saves off of 29 shots on the defensive end. Sieverts secured a game-high seven ground balls while Madisen Dibble followed closely with five. Chloe Mitchell rounded off the team with 12 draw controls.
The Knights (1-0) set the tempo early, going ahead 2-0 in the first half. Sieverts converted on a free position attempt to score the first goal of the game and her career. Johnson put Southern Virginia up 2-0 one minute later unassisted before the Marlins rattled off two goals to knot both teams at 2.
The Knights used a 6-1 led by four Thatcher points before both teams traded points to end the half. The Knights headed to their locker room with a comfortable 9-5 lead.
Southern Virginia wasted no time after the halftime break, scoring within the first 15 seconds of the second half off of a Johnson goal assisted by Hannah Davis, doubling up the Colonels 10-5.
Centre responded quickly 30 seconds later, cutting their deficit to four before Sieverts ignited a 4-0 run to extend their lead to eight points 14-6.
With 19 minutes remaining in the match, the Colonels used the double man advantage after two Knights were required to sit out the remainder of the game due to receiving two yellow cards.
Centre put together a 7-0 run to come within one point of Southern Virginia 13-14, but strong goalie and defensive play forced a late turnover. The Knights ran out the remainder of the time to lock in the win 14-13.
Southern Virginia is scheduled to take on NC Wesleyan Friday, February 26. Game time is set for 3:30 PM.
