BUENA VISTA, VA.—Out of an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and in alignment with our NCAA and conference partners, Southern Virginia University will suspend all varsity athletics teams, contests, practices, and activities effective Monday, March 16.
By making this decision, Southern Virginia University is following recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, health officials, and medical professionals encouraging social distancing to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Additionally, the NCAA announced Thursday the cancellation of all winter and spring championships in support of these preventative recommendations.
Although we are aware of no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on campus or in the local area, we are taking this preemptive step to protect the health, safety, and well-being of our campus and local community. We apologize to our student-athletes and fans who are affected by this decision—especially our graduating seniors—but these circumstances are largely out of our control and we are confident this is the right decision to protect our everyone.
Though we love athletics, we love our students more. The reward of competing is greatly outweighed by the risks it would pose in the current circumstances surrounding COVID-19.
