Athletic Training
What is an Athletic
Trainer?
"A certified athletic trainer (ATC)
is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in the
prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. In
cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the
ATC functions as an integral member of the athletic healthcare team
in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine
clinics, professional sports programs, industrial settings and
other healthcare environments." (NATA, 2000)
What
We Do
Southern Virginia University's athletic training staff is
responsible for the care of scholar-athletes from the time they
arrive on campus, aiding in the prevention of injuries. When
scholar-athletes are injured, they are treated by a highly
qualified athletic training staff.
Our athletic trainers are concerned with much more than just improvement in the weight room. They are committed to improving athletes' overall fitness and health. Our primary goal is to keep athletes healthy and prepared for competition by reducing their susceptibility to injury.
Where
We Work
The Athletic Training Room is located in the Knight Sports Arena,
across from the weight room. The training room is open for
operation from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the normal business week.
In addition to the main training room hours, athletes can schedule
appointments with a trainer.
Training
Room Policies
In order to maintain a functional facility for you, the athlete,
we have established the following training room policies and
procedures. Please become familiar with these policies and
procedures. All those who use the training room facilities are
required to abide by them.
Please do not ask the athletic trainers to compromise the standards that have been established for your care. Thank you for your cooperation.
- No spiked or cleated shoes allowed in the training room. Do not wear shoes when receiving treatment, and never put your feet on taping benches with shoes on.
- Do not bring uniforms, shoes or other equipment into the training room. The training rooms are not dressing rooms. Also watch for pencils and pens that are in your pockets so that you do not tear the taping benches.
- No food or drink is allowed in the training rooms (this includes eating ice from ice bags).
- Rough-housing is not allowed in the training room or in the cold tub area.
- Athletes will not be given treatment unless they are in the appropriate attire; i.e., shorts, t-shirts (treatments generally will not be given in street clothes).
- Athletes may not use the training room as a lounge, study hall or sleeping area.
- Athletes must shower before receiving post-practice treatment, using the whirlpool and being seen in the clinic. Athletes must bring their own towels for the Hydro area.
- Athletes must wait their turn for treatment or taping. Freshmen and walk-ons must come early or wait for the varsity to finish.
- Athletes will not treat themselves; all taping and modalities treatments will be done by the trainers. (You may tape your own fingers, hands and braces, but please ask the trainers for tape; do not take it on your own.)
- Use of the Athletic Training Room is restricted to intercollegiate athletes. Exceptions must be cleared through the head trainer.
- Phones in the athletic training room are not to be used by athletes without permission.
- Foul language is not tolerated.
- Any outside medical services require referral from the head trainer and team physician. Your coach is NOT authorized to send you to outside services. If you do not follow this procedure, you will pay for it yourself.
Hours of Operation
Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The training room will also be open one-and-a-half hours before game times. Appointments are available upon request outside of regular hours and on weekends.
