Senior wrestler Alexander Brunner from the Southern Virginia University men's wrestling team was chosen as the Knight of the Week.
Alex started wrestling at the young age of six when his uncle got him to try it out. He had always had a love for basketball before his uncle convinced him to wrestle. After just one season of wrestling, he became hooked on the sport.
He came to Southern Virginia for two reasons, "I was coaching a high school team at an offseason camp where I was invited to participate in an offseason tournament. I met Coach Davis at the tournament, and that was the first time I had heard about Southern Virginia University," said Brunner. That tournament, and the idea of having smaller class sizes brought Alex to Southern Virginia.
We asked Alex what his favorite part about this season has been. "The team bonding has been great. We have a lot of return players and even some new ones. It makes it feel like a big family. But favorite wrestling moment is beating W&L in the heavyweight competition," added Brunner.
While here at Southern Virginia, Alex says that his motivation is focusing on the big picture. He told us that he wants to become an Academic All-American which means that he first needs to qualify for nationals. After Southern Virginia, Alex plans to look into coaching wrestling. He also will be looking into a career in either cybersecurity or project management. Easy enough for him since he is currently double majoring in computer science and business.
