Knight of the Week

Knight of the Week

By Mike Myers

Nahuel Aguero is a strong outside hitter on the Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team and is the Knight of the Week. Aguero is one of two Argentines on the team and brings a level of prowess and skill to a team looking to succeed in their opening season in the Continental Volleyball Conference. His contributions recently helped the Knights complete a sweep against three top-ten teams.

Aguero, also known by his teammates as 'Papa,' radiates a humble confidence that few can rival. Some may assume that this prominent characteristic is due to being the oldest member of the team at 28 years old. Others, including head coach Tom Peterson, know that it comes from Nahuel's life experience and faith.

"As I have come to know Nahuel better I can tell you he is a great person as well as a good volleyball player," says Peterson. "He and his family have made great sacrifices to be at SVU. Papa makes others around him better on and off the court. That is a trait that is hard to develop, but it seems to come easily to Nahuel."

Where did you serve an LDS Mission?
I had the opportunity to serve in Chile Santiago North Mission.

What made you decide to attend Southern Virginia University?
It was several factors. My wife and I were already deciding where to head out to next in our life, and getting back to school was one of the options. One of the reasons that we decided on SVU was the volleyball program, but also the fact of having small classes and the opportunity to get through school faster.

How long have you been playing volleyball for?
I've been playing volleyball for 18 years. I started when I was 10 years old.

What motivates you to train hard?
I don't train hard. What I look for in each practice is that feeling of fulfillment that comes when you are doing something from your heart in a level of excellence.

How do you find balance with volleyball, school, and a family?
To be honest, finding balance as a student-athlete is very hard. In my life, balance comes through my wonderful wife. She is my pillar. Thanks to her I'm able to go to school, work and play volleyball. She supports me 100% and helps me to make my priorities very clear: God, my family, school, work and then volleyball.

Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?
I can't pinpoint a name, I'm almost 29 years old, I have been influenced by many great figures in my life. I can say that youth leaders and volleyball coaches have influenced me the most.

What is your favorite Argentinian meal?
Asado Argentino, which is Argentine BBQ.

Do you have a favorite sport or team outside of volleyball?
I love the real fútbol! I get really passionate when my national team plays; especially when Messi plays.

What would you like to do for your profession?
I'm majoring in biochemistry and my goal is to become a medical doctor.

What would you say to a prospective student looking into Southern Virginia University for volleyball?
I would tell him that we have a great and unique volleyball program with excellent coaches that tackle every single aspect of volleyball, and especially that they take care of us as people.
