BUENA VISTA, Va.—Southern Virginia University Director of Communications Chris Pendleton today named Daniel Whitehead as athletic communications director.
“We’re pleased that Daniel [Whitehead] has accepted the athletic communications director position,” said Pendleton. “We feel confident that he is the right person to advance Southern Virginia’s message through the forum of athletics.”
Whitehead replaces Pendleton, who served as the university's sports information director from 2011-13 until he was named Southern Virginia’s director of communications in June.
Whitehead will serve as the primary contact for Southern Virginia's 14 NCAA Division III athletics programs and will be responsible for coordinating the communications and media relations efforts for the university's athletics department.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work at a top-quality institution like Southern Virginia University to help promote its athletics programs,” said Whitehead. “I plan on working tirelessly to give all the athletics teams and scholar-athletes the exposure they deserve.”
Whitehead spent the 2012-13 academic year as an athletics media relations graduate assistant at the University of Wyoming, where he was the primary media contact for the women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs.
While at Wyoming, Whitehead also served as an assistant media contact for the Cowboy's football, and men’s and women’s basketball teams, handling in-game statistics while also assisting with postgame player interviews and press conferences. He was also responsible for creating game programs and weekly notes for his assigned sports along with keeping the teams’ information updated on www.gowyo.com.
Prior to Wyoming, Whitehead attended graduate school at West Virginia University where he earned a dual Master of Business Administration and Master of Sport Management degrees from 2010-12. While studying at West Virginia, he also served as a sports information graduate assistant with WVU Sports Communications where he was the primary media contact for the wrestling program as well as the women’s cross country and track and field teams.
Whitehead graduated from Brigham Young University in 2009 with a B.A. in communications with an emphasis in public relations. During his final two years in Provo, Whitehead was a student assistant in BYU Athletic Communications in which he was the primary media contact for the men’s and women’s golf and cross country teams.
A native of Salt Lake City, Whitehead graduated from Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah and served a fulltime mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina. He and his wife, Bethany, are the proud parents of two children.
"We expect Daniel to continue the standard of excellent athletic communications that we have set at Southern Virginia University," said Athletic Director Scott Y. Doxey. "As we head into our first year as full members of the Capital Athletic Conference, Daniel will work tirelessly to provide our scholar-athletes with the recognition and publicity they deserve."
