BUENA VISTA, Va.—The association of Virginia Sports Information Directors today announced its 2011 VaSID Academic All-State selections honoring six Southern Virginia University scholar-athletes.
Men’s basketball senior Derek Cutler (Fruit Heights, Utah), men’s cross country senior Jesse Houchens (Henderson, Nev.), volleyball/softball senior Ali Krebs (Lebanon, Ore.), volleyball/women’s tennis sophomore Brynn McGinn (Bedford, Ind.), football senior Matt Mellor (Colfax, Wash.) and baseball junior Andrew Snider (Lancaster, Calif.) were each honored for their commitment to academic excellence.
Five of the six Knights selected to the 2011 VaSID Academic All-State team—Cutler, Houchens, Krebs, McGinn and Snider—also earned United States Collegiate Athletic Association academic all-american honors as Southern Virginia led all 72 USCAA-member institutions with 32 academic all-american selections.
In addition to their academic achievements, each of these six Southern Virginia scholar-athletes had noteworthy athletic accomplishments during the recent academic year.
Culter, who will begin a master’s program in forensic science at Nebraska Wesleyan University this fall, was the starting forward on Southern Virginia’s men’s basketball team that won the school’s first USCAA men’s basketball national championship while setting program records for wins (24) and winning percentage (.750).
Houchens, who is currently serving as an intern in Senator Harry Reid’s Capitol Hill office, ran for the men’s cross country team that placed sixth at the USCAA National Meet.
Krebs earned her second USCAA all-american selection as a setter for the volleyball team, as well as academic all-american honors in two sports (volleyball, softball).
McGinn, who also earned USCAA academic all-american honors in two sports (volleyball, women’s tennis), was a key performer for the women’s tennis team that recorded the most wins (15) in program history while tying the highest single-season winning percentage (.833) in Southern Virginia athletics history.
Mellor, currently attending the University of Washington School of Dentistry, capped a four-year Southern Virginia football career by becoming the program’s all-time tackles leader with 269 total tackles. Mellor, who also set the record for unassisted tackles (163), was named to the NAIA All-Independent First Team and VaSID All-State Second Team following his senior campaign.
Snider was an integral part of Southern Virginia’s
baseball team that set program records for wins (30) and winning
percentage (.750), while finishing second place at the USCAA Small
College World Series. After leading his team in home runs (12),
runs (48) and triples (3), Snider made his second USCAA
all-american team and
first VaSID All-State Second Team.
“At Southern Virginia University we are committed to both academic and athletic excellence,” said Athletic Director Rick Winters. “It’s wonderful to see our scholar-athletes recognized for their dedication and commitment on the field and in the classroom.”
