BUENA VISTA, Va. Based on on-line voting, and SVU athletic staff voting, Southern Virginia Baseball player, Tyler Cox, has been named the 2009-2010 Knight Awards Male Rookie of the Year. The Knight Awards celebrate the accomplishments of Southern Virginia athletes for a year. The voting comes from the votes of fans on-line, and then is a combined with the votes of the athletic department staff to determine the winner.
Cox had a standout season for the Knights as he was third on the team in batting average. Cox hit .364 with 30 RBI's in his first campaign as a Knight. He also was a key factor for the defense as he guided the Knight pitchers behind the plate. Cox was second on the team in defensive statistics recording 147 putouts, with only three errors all season.
Cox's performances helped the team to its best record in the history of the program. The Knights also received their first bid to the USCAA National Tournament since 2005. Cox, a freshman from Forest, MS will be looking to improve for the following season, as the Knight's baseball program looks to build from a successful inaugural campaign under first year head coach, Logan Mann.
The Southern Virginia Athletic Department wishes to congratulate Tyler Cox as the 2009-2010 Rookie Male Athlete of the Year.
