Joe Mitskas joined the Southern Virginia University football staff in 2011 as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
Prior to Southern Virginia, Mitskas coached at NCAA Division III Guilford College from 2007-2010. Mitskas began at Guilford as defensive line coach and after one year with the Quakers, took over as defensive coordinator for the 2008 season.
Mitskas guided Guilford’s defense to one of its best seasons in 2009 and placed 10 players on the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference squad during his three years leading the Quakers' defense. Under Mitskas’ tutelage in 2010, Quakers linebacker Richard Paul became the ODAC’s leading tackler and the third-leading tackler in Division III football.
A native of Feasterville, Pa., Mitskas played at Millersville University from 2001-03 and earned First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honors as a senior. The three-year starting nose guard had 62 tackles in his final two seasons, 13 for loss.
Following his playing career, Mitskas began coaching at his alma mater as a student assistant in the spring of 2004. That year, he directed the Marauders’ defensive line and coached the William Penn High School junior varsity team.
In 2005, Mitskas served as defensive line coach at Albright College and the following season, he moved on to Muhlenberg College where he helped the Mules field the 36th-ranked defense in 2006 NCAA Division III football.
A 2000 graduate of Neshaminy High School, Mitskas earned First Team All-Suburban One League honors for three straight years under Coach Mark Schmidt. In 2010, he was inducted into the Neshaminy Football Hall of Fame.
