|Title:||Assistant Athletic Director; SAAC Advisor|
Tony Caputo is the head men's basketball coach, head men's tennis coach and assistant athletic director at Southern Virginia University.
Leading the tennis team into their first conference season, Caputo finished the year with five straight wins and an 11-8 overall record, earning the third most wins in a single season.
In his first season at the helm of men's basketball, Caputo led the 2012-13 Knights to a 17-7 record, registering the fewest losses (7) and second-highest winning percentage (.708) in program history, while also extending the team's record home winning streak to 28 games.
Caputo has experienced tremendous coaching success at Southern Virginia winning national championships as head men’s soccer coach (2000), assistant men’s soccer coach (2001) and assistant men’s basketball coach (2011). He is Southern Virginia’s all-time winningest coach for both men’s soccer (52-40-1) and men’s tennis (42-27).
During spring 2012, he led the men's tennis team to a 15-1 record, which not only set the mark for best record in program history, but also the best single-season winning percentage (.938) of any athletic team in university history.
Caputo came to Southern Virginia in 1998 as director of continuing education. He later served as assistant dean of admissions and acting director of admissions before becoming dean of admissions and financial aid in 1999—a position he held until 2008. During Caputo’s time as dean of admissions, Southern Virginia’s student population more than tripled in size.
Before coming to Southern Virginia, Caputo taught for
14 years—primarily American history and physical
education—in three different Utah school districts. During
that time, Caputo successfully coached several varsity sports,
helping three different men’s basketball teams reach the
state championship game.
Caputo graduated in 1984 from then Weber State College with a B.A. in history and was recognized as the outstanding physical education minor that year. In 1998 he received a master’s degree in education from Southern Utah University.
He served a fulltime mission for The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scotland.
Caputo resides in Buena Vista with his wife Tammy. They have four children.
